If I can get my machine to boot I can use smcFanControl to raise the minimum fan speed and it runs stable. I also think this can explain other reported problems with High Sierra on desktops - slowdowns can be caused by CPU throttling because the fan speed is not increased properly. I am sure it is something with the firmware. Since I have the problem no matter what I boot, in recovery from my machine, in recovery from an pre-High Sierra Time Machine disk etc. I have seen this reported several times on these forums but the responders don't usually take on board it is a problem with the firmware. My machine is shutting down from overheating but the fans are not running. I believe this has changed the temperature / fan speed profile in a way that is broken on 2012 era machines. I know HIgh Sierra updated the firmware (it must have updated something to support booting from APFS). Both fans are definitely operating correctly and can (when the system is booted) be increased to speed normally. I have run hardware check with no reported problems. I cannot even boot to target disk mode and have it last for more than a couple of minutes before turning off. This has rendered my machine unusable, it happens even when booted off a different drive, booting to recovery, booting of an install disk etc. I updated my mid-2012 15" macbook pro to High Sierra (10.13.5 from 10.12.6) and immediately after started to have random shutdowns (no warning, just a hard power off, no recovery or crash log).
